Founded in 1985 by Dr. Herbert Smith, HC Smith Ltd has spent four decades helping organizations make consequential leadership decisions.
What began as a search and leadership advisory firm has grown into a strategic advisory practice grounded in executive search, organizational development, cultural intelligence, Strategic Sensemaking, and human judgment for the AI era.

Our Story
HC Smith Ltd began with Dr. Herbert Smith.
Herb built the firm around a deep understanding of leadership, human capacity, and organizational life. From its earliest years, HC Smith Ltd approached executive search as more than placement. The work required discernment: understanding the organization, the role, the culture, the leadership mandate, and the conditions that would allow a leader to succeed.
That foundation still guides the firm.
Under the leadership of Becca Smith, HC Smith Ltd continued to grow as a trusted executive search and advisory partner for organizations across nonprofit, arts and culture, civic, professional services, communications, marketing, and mission-driven sectors. The firm’s work has always carried a relational discipline: listen closely, understand the context, honor the people in the process, and help clients make better leadership decisions.
As organizations have become more complex, the work has expanded.
Leadership decisions now sit inside faster-moving systems: AI adoption, workforce change, cultural tension, public accountability, governance strain, shifting stakeholder expectations, and fragile trust. Rebecca Ruben Smith, Managing Director, is a management generalist who brings a broad perspective to all search activities. She has been conducting senior-level search assignments in nonprofit management, arts and entertainment, marketing, communications, and consumer businesses since 1985.
