CLEVELAND, OH, June 2008 DHR International is pleased to announce that Dr. Herbert C. Smith joins as Managing Director in the firm’s Cleveland office. He is also a member of DHR’s Global Diversity Practice.
Dr. Smith brings over 25 years of experience to DHR. He founded and served as chairman of his own retained executive search and management consulting firm, recruiting talented senior-level executives for clients across a spectrum of for-profit, nonprofit, government, and educational institutions. Dr. Smith is widely respected for his ability to find, evaluate, and present highly-qualified men and women of color for key leadership positions.
Dr. Smith is a team-oriented management generalist who has recruited senior leaders in multiple practice areas including finance, manufacturing, human services, aerospace, arts and culture, higher and continuing education, information technology, healthcare, trade associations, and utilities.
A Chicago native, Dr. Smith directed youth development programs for the City of Chicago Department of Recreation and Community Services, the Metropolitan YMCA, and Urban Gateways. He taught and coached at the University of Chicago lab schools, and served as an applied behavioral science professor, administrator, and baseball coach at George Williams College. Dr. Smith served as a professor and athletic administrator at the University of Pittsburgh. His doctoral dissertation focused on the personal, academic, and career characteristics of high-achieving black athletes in predominantly white academic institutions. He organized a national academic counseling program for athletes in more than 44 NCAA colleges and universities. He also served as a consultant on multicultural diversity for the Village of Oak Park, IL and was later named the Village’s Assistant Manager.
Dr. Smith’s civic commitments include the boards of The Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito School of Management at The Claremont Graduate Universities (Claremont, California); The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University; Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE, Springfield, Missouri); advisory board of the National Black MBA Association Cleveland Chapter; and Board President Emeritus of The First Tee of Akron.
He holds a Bachelor’s from George Williams College, a Master’s from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
